Deepest Man Dives to an Astonishing 120 Metres To Achieve Three World Records at One Event
Herbert Nitsch finishes event with a 120 metre dive in 3 minutes and 58 seconds at Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas
13th April 2009 : - 38 year old Austrian, Herbert Nitsch, has dived to an incredible 120 metres in one breath and under 4 minutes - an improvement on his World Record dive earlier in the week by an extra 6 metres.
This is Nitsch’s 25th World Record, having also taken the World Record at the same competition for Free Immersion, diving to 109 metres.
“It was easy!,” joked Nitsch as he came out of the water. “I wanted to set a new bench mark today and I hope I’ve done that. My lung capacity has been improving and improving over the course of the competition and I thought that if I could just manage to equalize I would make it,” said Nitsch. “I think I can probably go another 10 metres if I concentrate on my training . . . but not today!”
Herbert Nitsch has the most World Records ever held by a free diver and has won almost all the competitions. He won his last World Championship in November 2007 by a clear lead, descending to 112 meters, has held his breath over 9 minutes and has a depth record of 214 meters (700 feet) with a sled.
Herbert is being filmed on location in the Bahamas by under water film production company BlueEyeFX. Based in Egypt and headed by British born Deborah Metcalfe, BlueEyeFX is documenting all attempts at Vertical Blue 2009 – the invitational freediving competition held at Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas.
